Mamallapuram (TN), Sept 27 (PTI) The Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR) conducted a large-scale coastal clean-up drive at Mamallapuram beach here on Sunday to mark World Tourism Day.
Organised as part of the nationwide ‘Swachhata Hi Seva’ fortnight running from September 16 to October 2, the event was held in accordance with directives from the Department of Atomic Energy, according to a press release.
IGCAR Director Sreekumar G Pillai, who flagged off the event as the chief guest, underscored that pristine surroundings form the bedrock of responsible tourism.
He urged the public to practice disciplined waste disposal and exercise greater accountability in shared spaces, noting that preserving sensitive coastal environs requires active
community stewardship.
The cleanliness operation drew around 200 participants, including IGCAR officials, scientists, members of the IGCAR Swachh Bharat Cell, and Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel. Working along key stretches of the shoreline, volunteers systematically collected multiple bags of single-use plastics and general refuse, which were subsequently taken for structured segregation and safe disposal.
