Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday held a telephonic conversation with US President Donald Trump to discuss the settlement of the Ukraine conflict after the visit of US envoys to both warring countries.
Putin and Trump exchanged views on the recent visits of Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to Moscow and Kyiv. The call was constructive, frank and held in a positive atmosphere, according to Sputnik.
The conversation “lasted exactly an hour, was constructive and extremely frank,” said Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov, adding that Putin had “emphasised that we have absolutely no aggressive plans whatsoever towards Europe”.
Putin presented an “objective and detailed analysis” of the frontline situation and supported Trump’s intention to build constructive
US-Russia relations, according to Ushakov. The talks brought no immediate breakthrough in the four-and-a-half-year war, although Russia has not ruled out three-way talks to settle the conflict.
Ukraine Peace Push
This came a day after the US said talks with Russia and Ukraine had made progress, raising hopes for three-way peace negotiations.
“Substantive progress was made, including movement on scheduling additional trilateral talks. President Trump is working hard to stop the killing and work towards a lasting and durable peace,” Witkoff wrote on X.
The Kremlin did not rule out three-way talks on Monday, but said it was too early to discuss a venue or exact dates. Zelenskyy said his team was also working on its next steps after the meetings with US and European officials.
The latest diplomatic push comes after previous US-backed talks between Moscow and Kyiv in Geneva in February failed to resolve key differences, especially over territory.
