15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi opened the innings for Rajasthan Royals in the IPL 2026 Eliminator and played a memorable knock of 97 runs off just 29 balls. During his explosive stay at the crease in New Chandigarh on Wednesday (May 27), he smashed five fours and 12 sixes for the Riyan Parag-led side.

The 12 sixes by Vaibhav in Mullanpur helped him extend his tally to 65 sixes in the ongoing IPL 2026 season. He now tops the list of batters with the most sixes in a single edition of the IPL. Previously, Chris Gayle held the record after smashing 59 sixes in 15 matches for Royal Challengers Bengaluru during the 2012 season.

After Vaibhav broke Gayle’s 14-year-old

IPL record at the age of just 15, former India opener Virender Sehwag reserved massive praise for the youngster, saying he had never seen batting like Vaibhav’s innings against SRH.

In a video posted by Star Sports on Instagram, Sehwag also said that if he were a selector for the Indian men’s cricket team, he would immediately pick Sooryavanshi for the national side.

“Maine aisi batting nahi dekhi. Maine bhi fastest 100 banaya hai India ke liye one-day cricket mein, lekin jo iss ladke ne batting kari aaj na… Koi soch nahi sakta tha ki Chris Gayle ke 59 chakko ka record ek 15 saal ka baccha todega. Main selector hota toh abhi isko Indian team mein daal deta (I haven’t seen batting like this. Even I scored the fastest hundred for India in ODI cricket, but the way this boy batted today… No one could have imagined that Chris Gayle’s record of 59 sixes would be broken by a 15-year-old kid. If I were a selector, I would put him straight into the Indian team,)” Sehwag said.

Former India middle-order batter Suresh Raina, who enjoyed a long IPL career with Chennai Super Kings, also appeared in the video and said Vaibhav could have broken the record for the fastest century in IPL history had he not been dismissed.
