A young chartered accountant was found dead, while his mother and teenage sister are battling for life, following what police believe was a coordinated suicide attempt at their residence in Ranchi’s Ashok
Nagar area.
The deceased, identified as Mihir, had recently returned to Ranchi from Kolkata. Police said he allegedly died by suicide at the family home. By the time neighbours alerted authorities and officers reached the spot, Mihir was already dead.
Investigators said Mihir’s mother, Sneha Akhouri, a practising lawyer at the Jharkhand High Court, and his 14-year-old sister were found alive but in critical condition after allegedly consuming a poisonous substance.
Both were immediately rushed to Guru Nanak Hospital, where doctors said their condition remains serious.
According to preliminary information, Mihir had completed his Chartered Accountancy course in Kolkata and had recently secured a job with a corporate firm.
The incident has shocked residents of the area, with neighbours saying they were unaware of any visible distress or tension within the family.
Following the incident, police teams cordoned off the house and launched an investigation. A Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team was called in to collect evidence, while officers questioned neighbours and local residents to piece together the sequence of events.
Police officials said the exact cause and circumstances leading to the incident are still unclear.
“The picture will become clearer once the mother and daughter regain consciousness and are able to record their statements,” an officer said.
The case is being probed from all possible angles, police added.
