With big-budget spectacles and larger-than-life action becoming the norm, one upcoming Hindi film is now aiming for something Indian cinema has rarely explored in a full-fledged way… alien horror.
Actor Akshay Kumar is set to headline Samuk, a sci-fi thriller centred around extraterrestrial horror elements. Directed by Kanishk Varma, the film is being produced by Akshay Kumar along with Vipul Amrutlal Shah and Ashin Shah. The project also reunites Akshay and Vipul after a gap of 12 years.
According to HT City, the makers have roped in several international technicians known for their work on major Hollywood franchises. One of the key names attached to the film is stunt coordinator Luke Tumber, whose credits include Mission: Impossible – The Final
Reckoning, Venom, No Time To Die and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
Speaking about the film, Tumber said, “This project represents an exciting fusion of international stunt expertise, visionary filmmaking, and authentic action cinema, and I’m proud to be part of bringing that vision to life. Together, we aim to deliver a film that combines powerful storytelling with cutting-edge live-action sequences that will resonate with audiences internationally.”
He also praised Akshay Kumar, calling him “widely recognised as the Action Hero of India”.
Apart from the action setup, Samuk is also putting major focus on practical creature effects. The film’s alien character is being developed by Academy Award-nominated effects artist Alec Gillis, known for his contribution to the Alien: Romulus universe, the Predator franchise, Smile 2 and Tremors.
Sharing details about the creature design, Gillis said, “Together Kanishk and I designed the title character, which is truly a unique alien horror. In an era of CGI and Al. it is gratifying that directors and audiences still value handcrafted, human-made traditional monsters,” he says.
He further added, “He has the physicality of Jason Statham and the likeability of Tom Cruise! My goal is to create an alien nemesis in Samuk whose energy and screen charisma equal Mr Kumar’s. Defeating this new classic movie monster will not be an easy task, even for him”
Confirming his involvement in the project, Akshay Kumar told HT City, “Yes, I’ve signed this film. I found the script and subject of Samuk fascinating. Sci-fi alien horror is a totally new genre for me and also for our films. I am very excited about it,” he tells HT City.
Before Samuk hits floors, Akshay Kumar will next be seen in Welcome To The Jungle.
