Australian power-hitter Mitchell Owen produced a breathtaking display in Major League Cricket, smashing a record-breaking 155 off just 68 deliveries for Washington Freedom against MI New York at Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas.
The explosive innings, featuring 11 fours and 13 sixes, powered Washington Freedom to 245 for 5 from their 20 overs, one of the highest team totals in the tournament’s history. Owen’s knock is now the highest individual score ever recorded in Major League Cricket and marked a stunning return to form for the 24-year-old.
Mitch Owen had missed out on Australia’s T20 World Cup squad earlier this year following a disappointing Big Bash League campaign. The century was his first in any format for 16 months and showcased the
devastating hitting ability that first brought him widespread attention.
Owen had already signalled his intentions earlier in the competition with a rapid half-century, but against MI New York, he went to another level. Opening alongside former Australia captain Steve Smith, he dominated a 134-run partnership that came in just 57 balls. Smith played a supporting role before falling to Corey Anderson midway through the innings.
The Tasmanian continued his assault alongside New Zealand batter Mark Chapman, adding another 82 runs for the second wicket. Chapman later summed up Owen’s remarkable effort, saying, “Thirteen sixes, a 150-plus score; a pretty special innings.”
Falling Short Of History!
At one stage, Owen appeared capable of breaking more T20 records, however, his innings ended in the 17th over when South African all-rounder Corbin Bosch held a sharp return catch off his own bowling. Remarkably, Owen still had 19 balls remaining when he was dismissed.
The innings surpassed Owen’s previous highest score in professional cricket, a 149-run List A knock for Tasmania in 2025. It also placed him among the highest-scoring Australians in T20 history, trailing only Aaron Finch’s record-breaking knocks of 172 and 156.
The highest individual score in T20 cricket remains Chris Gayle’s unbeaten 175 from 66 balls, which the Universe Boss registered while batting for Royal Challengers Bengaluru against Pune Warriors India in the 2013 Indian Premier League.
