The Class 10 student from a prominent private school in Delhi, who died by suicide earlier this week, was subjected to prolonged humiliation by his teachers, his family has alleged. Sixteen-year-old Shourya Patil’s father, Pradeep Patil, claimed that his son had endured a year of mistreatment, mockery, and mental pressure at school, culminating in a heartbreaking tragedy that has shocked the community.
According to Pradeep Patil, Shourya had repeatedly complained about being mocked and “ill-treated” by teachers over the past year. The harassment allegedly escalated whenever Shourya raised concerns about their behaviour or failed to meet their expectations. The father said that the situation worsened after he and his wife objected to the teachers’
conduct, with the school reportedly threatening Shourya with expulsion.
On the day he took his life, Shourya was participating in a school dance practice. During the rehearsal, he reportedly slipped and fell on stage. Instead of receiving support, he was allegedly scolded and humiliated in front of his peers. Pradeep said that when Shourya began crying, one of the teachers told him, “Cry as much as you want, it doesn’t matter to me.”
According to the FIR filed in the case, Shourya allegedly jumped from Platform 2 of Rajendra Place Metro Station on Tuesday. A purported suicide note recovered from his school bag reportedly named three teachers, accusing them of driving him to the extreme step. The school has not issued any comment so far.
Shourya’s father, Pradeep Patil, said his son had been complaining for a year about how he was being treated in school. “Whenever we raised the matter, the school would dismiss it, saying he needed to focus more in class and that his Maths grades were weak,” he stated before leaving for Sangli, Maharashtra, for the cremation.
Pradeep said the family refrained from escalating the issue fearing that the school might penalise Shourya. “At one point, they even threatened to issue him a Transfer Certificate,” he added.
Recounting events on the day of the tragedy, Pradeep said Shourya’s friends told him that the boy had fallen during a dance practice on stage. Instead of being helped, he was removed from the performance and allegedly accused of “acting” and “falling on purpose.” According to Pradeep, one teacher told the crying teenager, “Cry as much as you want, it doesn’t matter to me.” He also claimed that the principal witnessed the exchange but did not intervene.
