Thane, Sep 5 (PT) Three persons have been arrested for allegedly attempting to run down an on-duty police constable with a vehicle while illegally transporting around 500 kilograms of suspected beef in Bhiwandi town of Maharashtra’s Thane district, police said on Saturday.
The incident took place in the early hours of Friday near the Ganpati Temple on Karivali Road when Police Naik Amol Vijay Salunkhe signalled a car to halt.
But instead of complying, the driver accelerated directly towards the officer in an attempt to kill him, though Salunkhe managed to swerve out of the way just in time, the officials said.
Following a brief chase, assisting officers intercepted the vehicle and apprehended the driver, identified as Shahid Niyaz Ahmad Khan (22)
from Kurla in Mumbai.
A search of the vehicle led to the seizure of 500 kg of suspected beef.
Police stated that Khan was acting in collusion with co-accused Mastan Shaikh, Saddam Shaikh, Daval Shaikh, Faheem Baba, and three unidentified accomplices to transport the meat from an illegal slaughter to Govandi in Mumbai for unlawful sale.
Bhoiwada Police have registered a case under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) sections for attempt to murder, and relevant provisions of the Maharashtra Animal Preservation Act 1976 and the Motor Vehicles Act 1988.
A search is underway to nab the remaining five suspects. PTI COR NP
