An illegal migrant couple who travelled from Manhattan to Long Island last week to shoplift from a Target store were caught and handed over to Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE), officials speaking
to the New York Post said.
On Sunday, November 9, Gustavo Tellez Carillo, 36, and his girlfriend, Erika Gomez Moreno, 33, tried to shoplift an undisclosed amount of merchandise from the store in Westbury.
Nassau County police apprehended them after being called to the scene around 7:30pm. After conducting a short investigation, the Nassau County cops discovered that the couple was in the country illegally.
The authorities did not reveal what country the pair is from originally.
Nassau Police charged both Carillo and Moreno with fourth-degree grand larceny and handed over to ICE. They said the couple is now subject to be removed from the country.
Police in Nassau were able to transfer the couple to ICE as part of the county’s controversial partnership with the feds. Under this partnership, local police can work directly with federal immigration agents to identify and detain illegal migrants.
The county is already on course to detain more than 3,000 migrants for US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) under an agreement signed earlier this year by County Executive Bruce Blakeman. As part of the arrangement, ten county detectives have been deputised by federal authorities and are on standby to assist in immigration enforcement operations.
Blakeman has said that Nassau County is the first in the United States to implement a fully comprehensive partnership with ICE under the 287(g) programme. He argued that the county would continue working with federal officials to “keep our community safe from unvetted illegal immigrants who commit crimes, including fuelling the fentanyl crisis affecting young people.”
