Vaibhav Sooryavanshi opened the innings for Bihar in their third Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025-26 Plate Group match against Meghalaya on Monday (December 29) and scored 31 runs from just 10 balls. During his
stay at the crease, the left-handed batter from Samastipur hammered 6 fours and 1 six for the Sakibul Gani-led side and batted with a strike rate of 310.00.
Akash Kumar sent the 14-year-old cricketer back to the pavilion. On the first ball of the fifth over of the 218-run chase, Dippu completed Vaibhav’s catch.
There were high expectations from Vaibhav in the ongoing match against Meghalaya at JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi, but he failed to convert his good start into a big knock.
Sooryavanshi, who represents Rajasthan Royals in the cash-rich Indian Premier League, missed Bihar’s second Plate Group match against Manipur in Ranchi on Friday (December 26), whereas in the first match of the season, he slammed 190 runs from just 84 balls against Arunachal Pradesh.
In the match against Arunachal that Bihar won by a record margin of 397 runs, Vaibhav completed his century in 36 balls, which is the fourth-fastest List A century by an Indian batter, and crossed the 150-run mark in 59 balls.
He holds the world record of being the youngest batter in the world to score a century in List A cricket and also became the fastest batter in the world to score 150 runs in a List A match. Before him, the record was in the name of former South African batter AB de Villiers, who needed 64 balls to reach the 150-run mark.
Sooryavanshi is unlikely to play for Bihar in the remaining matches of the Vijay Hazare Trophy due to national duties.
He was named in India’s U19 World Cup squad on Saturday (December 27), and before that he will travel to South Africa with the U19 team to take part in a three-match one-day series. In the three youth ODIs against South Africa, Vaibhav will captain India in the absence of Ayush Mhatre. Mhatre and his deputy, Vihaan Malhotra, will feature in the U19 World Cup but won’t participate in the three youth ODIs against South Africa due to wrist injuries.
