Arijit Singh’s era as a playback singer has come to an abrupt and emotional close, leaving fans and the music industry in disbelief. The announcement arrived at a time when listeners were still soaking
in three of his recent releases — Gehra Hua, Ghar Kab Aaoge, and Maatrubhumi — making the news even more unexpected.
Despite having several projects already lined up for the year, Arijit has made it clear that he will not be taking on any new playback assignments going forward. The singer formally shared his decision through social media, first posting on his private account on X before issuing a detailed statement on Instagram.
The announcement triggered a wave of reactions online, with fans urging him to reconsider and fellow musicians expressing shock and sadness. While Arijit has clarified that he will honour all his existing commitments, his decision marks the end of an era that redefined modern Hindi film music.
What prompted Arijit Singh to step away from playback singing
In a candid tweet explaining the reasons behind his decision, Arijit revealed that the move was neither impulsive nor driven by a single incident. He wrote, “There isn’t just one reason for this; there are multiple factors, and I have been contemplating this for quite some time. Ultimately, I have mustered the necessary courage.”
Opening up about his creative restlessness, the singer added, “One of the reasons is quite straightforward: I tend to lose interest quickly, which is why I frequently alter the arrangements of my songs and perform them live.” He then made a striking admission: “So, here’s the truth: I’ve grown weary. I need to explore different music to thrive.”
Arijit also pointed to his desire to make space for new talent in the industry, writing, “Another factor is my eagerness to hear new singers who can inspire me genuinely.”
In his retirement statement shared on social media, the singer expressed gratitude and clarity about his future. “Greetings, Happy New Year to everyone. I want to extend my gratitude for the immense love you have shown me over the years as listeners. I am pleased to share that I will not be accepting any new projects as a playback singer moving forward. I am putting an end to this chapter. It has been an incredible journey.”
However, Arijit was quick to reassure fans that music will always remain central to his life. “I have been truly blessed. I am a fan of quality music and will be focusing on learning more and creating independently as a small artist in the future. Thank you once more for all your support.”
He further clarified, “I still have some outstanding commitments to fulfill, and I will complete them. So, you may
still see some releases this year. Just to clarify, I won’t cease making music.”
Arijit Singh’s last playback song and what lies ahead
Maatrubhumi from Battle Of Galwan stands as Arijit Singh’s most recent playback release. While details of his upcoming projects remain under wraps, the singer is expected to continue performing live and focusing on independent music, signalling a new, more personal phase of his artistic journey.
