Mirabai Chanu won India’s first gold medal of the 2026 Commonwealth Games after topping the women’s 48kg weightlifting event with a total lift of 190kg.
The Olympic silver medallist recovered from a failed opening snatch attempt at 82kg to clear the weight on her second try, setting a new Commonwealth Games record. She then successfully lifted 85kg on her final snatch attempt to establish a new Commonwealth record and finish the discipline in first place.
In the clean and jerk, Mirabai missed her opening attempt at 105kg but made no mistake on her second lift. The successful effort set another Commonwealth Games record and secured the gold medal.
Mirabai finished with 85kg in the snatch and 105kg in the clean and jerk for a winning total of 190kg,
comfortably ahead of the rest of the field.
The victory added another Commonwealth title to her career and gave India its first gold medal of the Glasgow Games.
