Malayalam superstar Mammootty left everyone impressed with his performance in his latest crime thriller Kalamkaval, where he takes on the challenging role of a psychopath. Directed by debutant Jithin K. Jose, the film has already sparked conversations for its dark theme and Mammootty’s bold character choice.
In a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, the actor opened up about why he decided to produce the film himself. Mammootty candidly revealed that backing the project was not just a creative decision but also a practical one. “No other producer will agree to cast me in such a role, so I produced it myself. You cannot perform the same role 100 times; it should be different,” he was quoted saying.
All About Kalamkaval
Directed by Jithin K
Jose and produced under Mammootty Kampany, Kalamkaval marks Mammootty’s return to the big screen following a brief hiatus due to health concerns. The film stands out as a psychological action-thriller, with Mammootty taking on a negative role. Dulquer Salmaan appears as the younger version of his character, Cyanide Mohan.
The story unfolds through a narrator who recounts a disturbing episode in the quiet village of Kottayikonam, near the Kerala–Tamil Nadu border. What begins as a minor clash between two youngsters escalates into a full-blown communal riot, dragging the village’s two dominant communities into a spiral of violence.
With Dulquer’s Wayfarer Films handling distribution in Kerala and the trailer revealing only limited hints, Kalamkaval has shaped up into one of Mammootty’s most compelling recent works.
Upcoming work
Malayalam cinema’s two biggest icons, Mammootty and Mohanlal, are finally sharing screen space again in Patriot, and the trailer of the much-anticipated spy thriller has only amplified the excitement. Dropped on Saturday, the trailer offers a gripping glimpse into what promises to be a layered, high-stakes narrative. While the reunion of the two legends is the biggest highlight, Patriot goes several notches higher with its ensemble. The film also features Fahadh Faasil, Kunchacko Boban, Nayanthara and Revathy in key roles. The trailer hints that each character has a substantial presence, adding depth and intrigue to the narrative rather than functioning as mere supporting parts.
Directed by Mahesh Narayanan, known for acclaimed films like Take Off, C U Soon and Malik, Patriot appears to lean into a realistic and tightly woven spy thriller space. The visuals suggest a multi-layered story set across locations, driven by tension and political undertones.
