Iran Says US Response On Hormuz Plan Expected 'Hopefully' Tomorrow After Qatar-Mediated Talks

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran had held fresh indirect talks with the United States through Qatari mediators in New York, with Washington’s response on Iran’s proposal for reopening the Strait of Hormuz expected “hopefully” by Wednesday.

Speaking to reporters, Araghchi said the latest discussions focused on ways to meet conditions set by Tehran for resolving the crisis and restoring traffic through the key shipping route.

Araghchi said Qatari mediators had presented new ideas during their latest meeting, which were aimed at narrowing differences between Tehran and Washington.

“They had ideas, and we discussed how a way could be found to meet Iran’s conditions and how those conditions could be fulfilled,” he said, according

to Iran’s official IRNA news agency.

US response by Wednesday

The ideas will now be taken to the US side, after which Washington’s response will be conveyed to Tehran, Araghchi said.

“I hope this will happen by tomorrow,” he added.

Araghchi said he would leave New York for Tehran within hours, while the Qatari mediators would pass on the US response once it was available.

He said messages had continued to be exchanged through Qatari and Pakistani intermediaries, but the process had become more serious following Iran’s latest proposal.

‘Process taken serious nature’

“Such communications and messages exchanged by Qatari and Pakistani intermediaries have always existed. But now, given the proposal Iran has put forward, the process has taken on a more serious nature,” he said.

Araghchi said discussions during his visit to New York had also focused on explaining Iran’s position on the regional conflict and the security situation around the Strait of Hormuz.

He said Tehran had presented what it considers a fair and logical plan for resolving the crisis and reopening the vital waterway, provided its conditions are met.

“Our mission was to communicate these conditions to the American side as well as to all other nations,” Araghchi said, adding that Iran wanted the international community to know that it had a plan.
