The long-running legal dispute between Salman Khan and his neighbour near the actor’s Panvel farmhouse returned to the Bombay High Court this week, with the court making significant observations on the use of social media and allegations made against public figures.
During a hearing on Thursday, the Bombay High Court questioned the rationale behind airing grievances on social media instead of pursuing remedies through appropriate legal and administrative channels. The court also stressed that the availability of social media platforms does not give individuals the freedom to publish defamatory material against others, including celebrities.
According to PTI, a single-judge bench of Justice Sharmila Deshmukh was hearing proceedings related to the
dispute involving Ketan Kakkad, who owns property adjacent to Salman Khan’s farmhouse in Panvel.
The court urged Kakkad to consider removing posts made against the actor on social media. It further indicated that if the content had been uploaded by third parties, intermediaries should take necessary steps to facilitate its removal.
Kakkad has alleged that Salman Khan violated environmental regulations and obstructed access to his property. He also claimed that despite approaching authorities with his complaints, no action was taken. The matter is now scheduled to be heard again on July 6.
The latest proceedings stem from an appeal filed by Salman Khan challenging a civil court order that had denied him interim relief in a defamation suit.
The actor had initiated legal action in 2022 against Kakkad over a series of tweets, social media posts and YouTube videos linked to a property-related dispute between the two parties.
In his suit, Salman alleged that the content published by Kakkad was defamatory and capable of creating communal discord. The actor maintained that the allegations made against him were baseless, speculative and inflammatory in nature.
During the earlier proceedings, however, the court had observed that Salman had not been able to conclusively establish that a particular video interview he objected to directly referred to him.
As part of the 2022 proceedings, Salman Khan’s counsel informed the court that Kakkad had made several serious allegations against the actor. According to submissions made on behalf of Salman, Kakkad accused him of being “a front for the D Gang, commenting on his religious identity and implying that he was connected to the ruling party at the central and state level, levelling allegations of child trafficking, further alleging that bodies of film stars are buried in his farmhouse.”
Responding to the allegations through his lawyer at the time, Salman stated, “Without proper proof, all these allegations are a figment of the defendant’s imagination. In a property dispute, why are you tarnishing my personal reputation? Why are you bringing in religion? My mother is a Hindu, my father is a Muslim, and my brothers have married Hindus. We celebrate all festivals.”
The dispute has remained before courts for several years, with both sides continuing to contest the claims made in connection with the property matter.
On the professional front, Salman Khan was last seen in the 2025 film Sikandar. The actor is next set to appear in Maatrubhumi: May War Rest in Peace. He also has an upcoming project directed by Vamshi Paidipally, which will co-star Nayanthara.
