Aakash Chopra, the former Indian cricketer turned commentator, declared over his X account on 25 April to hand over the IPL 2026 trophy mid-season to the Punjab Kings. The match that inspired Chopra to post that tweet was played between the Delhi Capitals and the Punjab Kings. Batting first, DC plundered 264/2 runs, securing a certain win. Or that is what they thought.
Punjab Kings, the IPL 2025 finalists, came all guns blazing. Boasting five consecutive wins behind them since the commencement of IPL 2026, Shreyas Iyer’s aggressive men pushed pedal to the metal once again and made a mockery of Delhi’s target of 265, which was powered by KL Rahul’s 152 from 67 balls. Openers Prabhsimran Singh (76) and Priyansh Arya (73) scored briskly, hammering
away 126 runs in just 42 balls.
Captain Iyer then anchored the chase with an unbeaten 71 off 36 deliveries after being awarded two lifelines by Delhi’s sloppy work in the field. Punjab Kings’ stunning chase of 265 became the highest successful run chase in T20 cricket history, setting a new world record.
Disaster Ensues
This was Punjab’s last win in IPL 2026. Chopra’s tweet aged like milk, and PBKS followed up their glorious six-consecutive-win streak with six consecutive, back-breaking losses. Table toppers on 25 April now remain stuck on the #4 spot on the points table, desperately trying to sneak in and find the only spot left in the playoffs this summer.
Punjab’s losing streak may have left their loyal supporters helpless, but there is something that could bring them cheer, even if so briefly: PBKS losing six matches on the trot is bad, but other IPL franchises have experienced the depths of losing hell.

The Biggest IPL Losers
Punjab Kings fans would be relieved to learn that they are not the table-toppers on the losing streak list in the IPL.
So which team has already seen the worst since the IPL made its glorious debut on April 18, 2008?
Pune Warriors India: The now-terminated franchise that was added to the IPL 2011 did not see much success in its three-season stint. The Sahara-owned team played 46 matches, winning 12, losing 33, and one match with no result. The second team to come out of the state of Maharashtra after Mumbai Indians registered a staggering 11 losses spanning across two seasons (2012-2013), making them the joint toppers on this unflattering list. PWI also hold a record for the most consecutive losses in a single season, IPL 2013. Pune lost 9 games in IPL 2013 in succession.
Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals):
Delhi Daredevils share the top spot with Pune Warriors India for experiencing the longest streak of losses. DD (now DC) lost 11 consecutive matches across two seasons (2014-2015).
Kolkata Knight Riders:
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) share the joint record with Pune Warriors India for witnessing the longest losing streak in a single season. KKR’s horror show unfolded in South Africa during the IPL 2009, where the Kolkata-based franchise lost 9 matches in a row.
Next Longest Streak
The five-time IPL champions, Mumbai Indians, registered as many as 8 losses in IPL 2022, marking their worst single-season losing streak. Delhi Daredevils endured 8 straight losses in IPL 2013.
Kings XI Punjab’s (now Punjab Kings) worst IPL season came in 2015 when they were stung with a seven-match losing run.
