Shubman Gill entered an exclusive company with his ton against West Indies in the second Test between India and the Windies on Saturday at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi.
Gill joined the likes of
Virat Kohli, who registered five Test centuries in 2017 and 2018, with his century against the Windies at the national Capital city.
Kohli accomplished the feat in 16 innings in the year 2017 and 24 innings to emulate his feat the next year around. Legendary batter Sachin Tendulkar, who made four centuries as the skipper of the Indian side in the year 1997 did so in 17 innings.
Gill, astoundingly, needed just 12 innings to notch up five tons in the ongoing calendar year, the quickest by an Indian skipper to five tons.
India won the toss and opted to have a bat first and enjoyed good returns on their decision as Yashasvi Jaiswal and Gill posted triple-digit scores to post a mammoth total of 518 runs for the loss of half their side.
Jaiswal opened the innings alongside KL Rahul before the latter was sent back to the hut by Jomel Warrican for 38 runs. Sai Sudharsan came on to replace the fallen keeper-batter at the crease and accompanied Jaiswal in a 243-run stand before Sudharsan fell to Warrican for 87 runs.
Jaiswal, who was going incredibly strong at 175 runs fell to an unlucky dismissal as a confusion in the middle of the ground lead to his unfortunate run out as the southpaw opener finally fell on the second day of the innings.
Nitish Kumar Reddy chipped in with 49 runs before Warrican struk again, while Dhruv Jurel added 44 runs before opposition skipper Roston Chase removed the batter. India declared their innings at 518/5 in 134.2 overs.
