Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday congratulated Indian athletes on their recent successes in sport, highlighting PV Sindhu’s Japan Open triumph and the women’s cricket team’s historic Test victory at Lord’s.
Addressing the 136th episode of his monthly radio programme Mann Ki Baat, PM Modi also extended his best wishes to the Indian contingent competing at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
“The Commonwealth Games began in Glasgow, just a few days ago. Every Indian is constantly extending one’s best wishes to the Indian contingent. It is their wish that all players and athletes perform exceptionally well and win the hearts of the people,” he said.
The Prime Minister praised India’s recent sporting achievements, particularly Sindhu’s landmark
badminton title.
“Our youth have achieved remarkable feats in sports recently. PV Sindhu has become the first Indian to win the Japan Open title in badminton; the entire nation is proud of this achievement of hers,” Modi said.
He also lauded the Indian women’s cricket team for securing a historic 270-run victory over England at Lord’s, which marked the venue’s first-ever Test match involving a women’s team.
“The Indian women’s cricket team also won its first-ever Test match at the Lords Stadium in London. This is a historic victory; our team won the match by a massive margin of 270 runs,” he said.
He highlighted the significance of the result, noting India’s history at the iconic venue.
“It was on this very ground that India won her first Cricket World Cup in 1983. Now, our ‘Nari Shakti’ has brought glory to the nation there,” he added.
He concluded by saying sport could be used not only to encourage participation but also to make education and cultural learning more engaging for young people.
