A disturbing incident was reported from Sitamarhi district, where a fatal road accident involving a schoolboy was followed by shocking behaviour from bystanders, police said.
The incident took place near
Jhajhihat village under the jurisdiction of Pupri police station. Ritesh Kumar, a Class 7 student also known as Golu, was on his way to morning coaching classes when he was hit by a speeding pickup truck. The boy, son of Santosh Das, died on the spot due to the impact.
Family members rushed to the scene after hearing about the accident and were left devastated by the loss. However, police said the situation took an unsettling turn as the pickup truck, which was carrying fish, had spilled its load across the road following the collision.
Instead of helping the victim or informing emergency services, several people gathered at the site and began looting the fish from the vehicle. Videos from the spot showed individuals filling sacks and fleeing with the fish even as the child’s body lay nearby.
After receiving information, police from Pupri police station reached the spot, dispersed the crowd and took custody of the body, which was sent for post-mortem examination.
The pickup truck involved in the accident has been seized, and police said an investigation is underway to identify the driver and establish the circumstances that led to the crash.
