Renowned mountaineer Nirmal ‘Nimsdai’ Purja has died in an avalanche on Broad Peak, the world’s 12th-highest mountain, his expedition company Elite Exped confirmed on Saturday. He had been missing along with five other climbers since Friday after an avalanche struck their team during the expedition.
In a statement shared on Instagram, Elite Exped said it was announcing the news with “profound sadness and immense heartbreak”. The company also confirmed that other members of the expedition had lost their lives in the tragedy.
“We mourn not only Nims, but every life lost in this tragedy, including his trusted climbing partners and guides, Pur Bahadur Gurung (Yukta) and Nima Sherpa,” the company said. It extended condolences to the families and loved
ones of all those who died and requested privacy for them during this difficult time.
