Uncapped Sussex seamer Henry Crocombe has earned his maiden England call-up for the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka after producing back-to-back hat-tricks in the County Championship.
The 24-year-old first achieved the feat against Somerset at Hove last week, claiming three wickets in three deliveries. Just eight days later, Crocombe repeated the achievement against Essex at Chelmsford, finishing with impressive figures of 5-39.
Crocombe’s call-up caps a breakthrough season. He was briefly added to England’s squad for the second Test against New Zealand in June after former captain Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson were dropped for disciplinary reasons.
Meanwhile, uncapped Derbyshire batter Aneurin Donald has been included in England’s T20I
squad. The 29-year-old enjoyed an excellent Vitality Blast campaign, scoring 489 runs in 12 matches, and also impressed for Trent Rockets in The Hundred.
“Aneurin Donald and Henry Crocombe are two promising players who have earned their places on the back of impressive performances in domestic cricket,” said England men’s national selector Marcus North.
“Aneurin has had an exceptional season for Derbyshire in the Vitality Blast and also with Trent Rockets in The Hundred while Henry is a player we have had an eye on all summer.”
Ben Duckett returns to the T20I setup after being left out earlier this year, while Phil Salt misses out due to a right quad problem.
Jacob Bethell continues his recovery from the right knee injury he sustained during the white-ball series against India. An England spokesman said Friday that he “remains on course in his rehabilitation”. The all-rounder is expected to target a return during England’s white-ball tour of Australia in November.
The three-match T20I series begins in Southampton on September 15, followed by the ODI series opener at Chester-le-Street on September 22.
