New Delhi, Oct 26 (PTI) Legal metrology is the cornerstone of trade, and accurate measures make commerce seamless, Consumer Affairs Secretary Nidhi Khare said on Monday, as India hosted the meeting of International Committee of Legal Metrology (CIML) for the first time.
Speaking to PTI on the sidelines of the inaugural session of the 61st meeting, Khare said the event was “a matter of great pride” for the country.
About 70 delegates from 32 member states are attending the three-day event along with representatives of the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM), based in Paris, and several liaison organisations.
“If measures are accurate, trade is seamless, and measurement does not become a trade barrier,” Khare said.
She described legal
metrology as the foundation of robust trade and commerce in any economy.
The meeting is organised each year by the Secretariat of the International Organisation of Legal Metrology (OIML), which holds it in member countries as well as at its headquarters.
Khare said hosting the event gives Indian legal metrology officials direct exposure to developments in global trade.
She also pointed to the rapid arrival of new instruments in both household and commercial use. “It is very important that they are harmonised and enjoy global accountability,” she said, adding that India needs to learn from the global experience and keep its measurement framework updated to support economic growth.
The event, which concludes on October 28, is organised by Department of Consumer Affairs, in association with OIML. PTI LUX ANU
