Filmmaker Sajid Ali’s next Heer Ranjha is one of the most anticipated films, and following the success of his directorial Laila Majnu, moviegoers can’t wait for more updates. Amid this, several reports circulated that Rohit Saraf will play the lead in the film and that he has even started shooting for the film very soon. However, Sajid has now reacted to the news.
Speaking to HT, Sajid rubbished all these reports and shared, “Nothing has been finalised till now,” and continued, “This old news has resurfaced. I don’t know from where.”
“There is nothing much to talk about yet, but we’re starting in mid-October. We will be shooting in Dehradun,” he concluded, confirming that nothing has been confirmed as of now and that he is planning to cast a newcomer
as the female lead, but it has not been locked in.
What We Know About Heer Ranjha
The makers unveiled Heer Ranjha through a short teaser that leaned heavily into mood and music rather than star power. The announcement video featured a soft, evocative score hinting at heartbreak and longing, without revealing any cast members. The caption read: “Some love stories never die… From Laila Majnu to Heer Ranjha, The Love Legacy Continues.”
The film marks the reunion of Imtiaz Ali and Sajid Ali after Laila Majnu (2018), which gradually attained cult status over the years. Heer Ranjha will be produced under Ektaa Kapoor’s Balaji Telefilms banner.
According to the official statement, the film is described as “rooted in classic romance yet shaped for today’s time,” aiming to reinterpret eternal love for a contemporary audience while retaining poetic intensity. Shooting is expected to begin once the cast is finalised.
The Laila Majnu Effect
Heer Ranjha arrives on the back of Laila Majnu’s remarkable afterlife. Though the 2018 film, starring Avinash Tiwary and Triptii Dimri, opened to positive reviews, it struggled at the box office during its initial run, earning only ₹3 crore domestically.
Over time, however, the film found its audience, building a devoted fan base and prompting calls for a re-release. In 2025, that demand materialised. The re-release added ₹11 crore to its tally, helping the film break even and cement its cult reputation.
That resurgence appears to have paved the way for the Ali brothers to revisit another iconic folk romance. With Heer Ranjha, they now aim to craft yet another sweeping love story, one that bridges folklore and modern emotion, just as Laila Majnu eventually did.
For now, however, one thing is clear: the casting remains open, and fans will have to wait a little longer for the official reveal.
