Google Photos now lets users switch between Classic Search and Ask Photos, offering a choice between quick keyword results and more detailed AI-powered queries.
Google Photos is giving users easier access to its Classic Search experience through a new toggle in the mobile app. The control allows eligible users to switch between traditional keyword results and the AI-powered Ask Photos tool without changing account settings.
Google first announced the improved search controls in March. The toggle is now appearing more widely in Google Photos for Android and iOS, although its availability may continue to vary by account, country and supported language.
What Is Classic Search in Google Photos?
Classic Search uses keywords to find matching photographs
and videos. Users can enter the name of a person, location, object or date to display relevant items from their library.
For example, searches such as “dog,” “car,” “Delhi” or “birthday” can quickly produce matching images. It is best suited to situations where users already know what they are looking for and can describe it with a short phrase.
Classic Search generally provides a conventional grid of results without generating a written response. This can make it faster and easier to scan for a specific photograph.
How Is Ask Photos Different?
Ask Photos uses Google’s Gemini AI models to understand longer and more conversational queries. It can consider people, places, events and other details found across a user’s photo library.
Instead of searching for “beach,” a user could ask for pictures from a particular family holiday or request photographs showing someone participating in a specific activity.
Ask Photos can also provide conversational summaries or answer questions based on information visible in saved images. However, complex requests may take longer to process than a straightforward Classic Search query.
The AI-powered experience requires users to opt in and is available only to eligible accounts in supported regions and languages.
How to Switch Between Search Options
Open the Google Photos app and go to the Search or Ask tab. Enter a query and look for the toggle displayed at the top of the results page.
Select Classic Search to view traditional keyword-based results or switch to Ask Photos for an AI-generated response. Users can move between both views without typing the query again.
When Ask Photos is enabled, the app may decide whether a request is better answered using AI or the classic experience. The toggle allows users to override the displayed result type.
Why Google Is Offering Both Options
The two systems are intended for different searches. Classic Search is useful for fast and simple queries, while Ask Photos is designed for requests that require more context.
Users who do not see the toggle should update the Google Photos app and check again later, as the feature is being enabled gradually.
