Singer Sonu Nigam has drawn criticism online after declining to speak about the ongoing protests over alleged irregularities in the NEET examination. A short video from a media interaction has gone viral, with users sharply divided over whether the singer should have addressed the issue.

In the clip, reporters can be heard asking Sonu for his response to the student-led agitation. He avoids answering and indicates that he is not present to discuss the matter. As the questions continue, he appears irritated and says, “Abhi ho gaya, bas,” before bringing the exchange to an end.

The location and occasion of the interaction remain unclear.

Sonu Nigam’s Silence Triggers Mixed Reactions

Several social media users criticised Sonu for refusing to comment, particularly at a time when a number of actors, musicians and other public figures have extended support to protesting students.

One user wrote, “Shameless, talent doesn’t necessarily turn you into a good human being.”

Another accused celebrities of staying silent when public causes do not directly benefit them, writing, “Spineless so-called celebrities have zero contribution when it comes to supporting a genuine cause or standing up for our students’ plight or nation-building.”

Others, however, defended Sonu and argued that public figures should not be compelled to offer opinions on every politically sensitive matter. One user suggested that the singer may be cautious because previous controversies had affected his professional standing.

“Can’t blame him. He was boycotted by Bollywood before he started tweeting about Azaan, then his career revived. Now, he needs to walk on eggshells if he has to speak about anything. His bread and butter is always on the line,” the post read.

Sonu has not issued a separate statement about the protests on his social media accounts.

Film Industry Voices Support For Students

While Sonu chose not to comment, several members of the entertainment industry have publicly backed the agitation. Salman Khan, Anupam Kher, Sonakshi Sinha, Riteish Deshmukh and Aditi Rao Hydari are among those who have shared messages of support.

Earlier this week, Shabana Azmi, Prakash Raj and rapper Hanumankind joined the ‘Chalo Sansad’ demonstration in New Delhi. The march later witnessed police action, including a lathi charge and the use of tear gas.

In Mumbai, Huma Qureshi, Saqib Saleem, Ayesha Khan and Shalini Pandey also joined protesting students.

The movement began over allegations of irregularities in the NEET examination and has since spread across cities. Protesters are demanding accountability and the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
