In a significant development for Telangana’s proposed second airport at Warangal, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has started the process of selecting a consultant to obtain environmental clearance for the project. Tender documents released by AAI state that the appointed consultant will prepare an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report based on the airport-specific guidelines formulated by the Administrative Staff College of India.
Officials said the consultant must secure environmental approval within six months, after which the agency will continue monitoring regulatory and environmental compliance for the next three years, as reported by The Times Of India.
Airport To Include Modern Runway And Advanced Terminal
The proposed airport will feature a 2.5-km runway along with a contemporary
domestic terminal designed to accommodate around 850 passengers during peak operating hours. According to AAI, the terminal building will cover nearly 6,800 square metres and will function as a centrally air-conditioned one-and-a-half-level structure fitted with modern passenger facilities.
Authorities said the design and operational framework will comply with norms laid down by the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security.
Passenger Facilities To Focus On Comfort And Efficiency
AAI said the terminal’s interiors are being planned with emphasis on convenience, functionality and visual appeal. Facilities proposed at the airport include check-in counters, baggage conveyor systems, queue management areas, facilitation desks, weighing machines, lost-and-found sections and housekeeping units.
The terminal will also include self-service check-in kiosks, bus lounges with seating arrangements, smoking areas, child-care rooms and washroom facilities.
Airport To Include Accessibility-Friendly Infrastructure
Officials said special attention is being given to accessibility features to support passengers with disabilities and reduced mobility.
The airport terminal will incorporate tactile flooring, ramps and additional infrastructure for persons with reduced mobility (PRMs), visually impaired travellers and passengers with hearing impairments, in line with civil aviation accessibility guidelines.
Security Measures Planned Across Terminal Premises
The airport’s security setup will include dedicated passenger frisking areas equipped with door-frame metal detectors, X-ray baggage scanners and frisking platforms.
Authorities said these systems are intended to streamline passenger screening while maintaining aviation safety and security standards.
Warangal’s Heritage To Be Reflected In Airport Design
AAI has also asked bidders to integrate regional art and cultural themes into the airport’s architectural and interior design.
The terminal and surrounding premises are expected to highlight Warangal’s cultural identity through artworks, installations and decorative elements created by local artisans and craftsmen.
