After nearly two years of waiting, House of the Dragon Season 3 finally premiered on June 22, 2026, with the first episode dropping in India at 6:30 AM IST. The season opened on a thunderous note, bringing viewers straight into one of the most anticipated events of the Dance of the Dragons: the Battle of the Gullet.
The episode ended with blood, fire, shattered fleets and one heartbreaking death that is certain to dominate fan conversations. While Team Black technically emerged victorious, the cost of that victory was so enormous that it can only be described as a Pyrrhic win.
House Of The Dragon Season 3 Premiere Ends With Battle Of The Gullet
The season opener wasted no time in escalating the civil war between Team Black and Team Green. The Battle
of the Gullet unfolded as a chaotic mix of naval warfare, dragonfire and personal tragedy, with both sides suffering severe damage.
During the battle, Tyland Lannister was caught in the chaos and initially appeared to be in grave danger. However, Moondancer intervened at a crucial moment, allowing him to escape. The battlefield became even more unpredictable when the wild dragon Sheepstealer entered the fight and began attacking both sides, throwing the already brutal conflict into further confusion.
Amid the madness, Commander Sharako Lohar ordered High Tide to be burned. The move appeared to be aimed not just at military destruction but at emotionally wounding Corlys Velaryon, whose house and legacy were deeply tied to the seat of House Velaryon.
Jason Lannister Dies In Brutal Fashion
The episode also featured the violent death of Jason Lannister, Tyland Lannister’s twin brother. Jason met a grim end on the battlefield when he was beheaded during the conflict.
His death added another layer of shock to the episode, especially as the battle kept shifting in momentum. With dragons attacking from above, ships burning below and soldiers being cut down across the battlefield, the premiere made it clear that Season 3 will not soften the cost of war.
Jacaerys Velaryon’s Death Leaves Fans Heartbroken
The most devastating moment of the episode, however, was the death of Jacaerys Velaryon. Jace entered the battle while still carrying the grief of losing his younger brother and was driven by a desperate need for revenge.
During the conflict, his dragon Vermax was struck, causing both dragon and rider to crash into the sea. Jace managed to free himself from the wreckage, briefly giving viewers hope that he might survive the fall. But that hope was short-lived.
Soon after escaping, Jace was targeted by enemy archers and struck by multiple arrows. His death instantly became the emotional centre of the premiere, marking a major blow for Rhaenyra Targaryen and Team Black.
Jace’s fall is likely to have far-reaching consequences for the rest of the season. Beyond being Rhaenyra’s son and heir, he represented one of Team Black’s most important young leaders. His death will almost certainly deepen the rage, grief and desperation driving the war forward.
Who Won The Battle Of The Gullet?
Despite losing Jacaerys Velaryon, Team Black secured a technical victory in the Battle of the Gullet. The decisive turn came when Alyn of Hull killed Triarchy commander Admiral Sharako Lohar in single combat.
Lohar’s death shattered the morale of the Triarchy forces and forced their fleet to retreat. This allowed Team Black to claim victory, but it was far from clean or triumphant.
The Velaryon fleet suffered massive damage during the battle, with nearly 30 percent of its ships destroyed. High Tide was also burned, and the death of Jace left Rhaenyra’s side emotionally devastated.
In other words, Team Black won the battle but paid a terrible price. The premiere made it clear that in the Dance of the Dragons, victory rarely arrives without ruin attached to it.
How House Of The Dragon Changed Fire & Blood
The House of the Dragon Season 3 premiere also introduced some notable deviations from George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood. One of the biggest changes involves Sharako Lohar. In the show, Lohar is killed during the Battle of the Gullet by Alyn of Hull. In the book, however, the character survives the conflict.
Jason Lannister’s death is also handled differently. In Fire & Blood, Jason is beheaded by Roddy the Ruin before the naval battle begins. In the series, his death takes place during the battlefield chaos.
Tyland Lannister’s fate is another point of departure. In the source material, Tyland’s fate remains uncertain after he is thrown overboard during the chaos. The show, however, gives him a moment of escape after Moondancer intervenes.
These changes suggest that Season 3 may continue reshaping certain events from the book while keeping the larger emotional and political consequences intact.
When Will House Of The Dragon Season 3 Episode 2 Release?
Following the June 22 premiere, House of the Dragon Season 3 is expected to follow a weekly release pattern. New episodes are likely to drop every Monday in India at 6:30 AM IST, simultaneously with their release in the United States.
After beginning with the Battle of the Gullet, the season has already set a brutal tone for what lies ahead. With Jacaerys dead, the Velaryon fleet weakened and Rhaenyra’s side wounded despite victory, the war for the Iron Throne is only expected to grow darker from here.
