Ben Stokes provided a timely reminder of his value with a fluent 95 for Durham against Northamptonshire in the County Championship on Saturday, even as England struggled without their regular captain in the second Test against New Zealand at The Oval.
Stokes, currently unavailable for England duty while an investigation continues into a curfew breach following the first Test at Lord’s, fell agonisingly short of a hundred when he was bowled by seamer Harry Conway shortly after tea at Chester-le-Street. The all-rounder’s 118-ball innings featured 18 boundaries and came at a crucial stage for Durham, who were in trouble at 30-3 in response to Northamptonshire’s imposing first-innings total of 450.
The visitors had built their score around a career-best
187 from Ricardo Vasconcelos, placing Durham under significant pressure. However, Ben Stokes steadied the innings with a commanding display, sharing a vital 153-run fourth-wicket partnership with Will Rhodes. After Stokes’ departure, Rhodes continued the resistance with 62 as Durham closed day two on 302/7, still trailing but firmly back in the contest.
The 95 represented one of Stokes’ most substantial first-class knocks in recent times. A century would have been his first in the format since his 141 against India in July 2025, and only his second first-class hundred since August 2022. Nonetheless, the innings served as an encouraging return to form with the bat after a relatively lean run.
England Struggle Against New Zealand
Meanwhile, England’s difficulties at The Oval only intensified discussions surrounding Stokes’ absence. Chasing a daunting target of 463 against New Zealand, the hosts ended the fourth day on 182/5 and appeared destined for defeat. Joe Root has stepped in as captain for the match, while fellow absentee Gus Atkinson also remains unavailable.
Stokes and Atkinson are being investigated following an incident in a London nightclub after England’s 115-run victory in the opening Test, having breached the team’s midnight curfew. The episode sparked widespread speculation about Stokes’ future, including suggestions he could lose the captaincy or even step away from international cricket.
However, reports in the British media indicate the process is progressing positively, with a pathway emerging for both players to return. While no official announcement has yet been made, Stokes could potentially be back in England colours for the series-deciding third Test against New Zealand at Trent Bridge next week.
