The Matcha trend is clearly getting out of control. Over the past few months, this finely ground green tea powder from Japan has taken the Internet by storm. From lattes and desserts to smoothies and even
skincare, it has become a full-blown lifestyle trend, especially among Gen Z.
But the trend recently went a step too far on social media, when someone combined the classic Indian dessert, Jalebi, with traditional Japanese Matcha. For many, the fusion felt more like a personal attack than a culinary experiment, especially among desis.
Matcha Jalebi Viral Video
The video shared on Instagram shows the traditional method of preparing a round, orange Jalebi. What caught viewers’ attention, however, was its unusual green hue, a result of adding matcha powder to the classic Indian sweet.
As the clip progresses, a person is seen pouring more Jalebi batter into hot oil in a round shape, while carefully flipping the others to ensure they cook evenly on both sides. The text overlay on the video reads: “They got matcha jalebi now.”

How Did Social Media React?
The clip has left several users disgusted, prompting many to share their reactions. An Instagram user wrote, “Why?” Another one wrote, “Chee bhai.” One of them shared, “Hulk became Hulk after he had this.”
A person wrote, “That’s just wrong.” A comment reads, “Stop it. Get some help.”
A foodie wrote, “This looks like someone vomited after drinking matcha (don’t mix random things, yaar).”
Another one quipped, “I feel like puking already.”
“Whoever made this, count your days because I’m coming for you,” a comment read.
Meanwhile, one of them jokingly said, “Death penalty should be handed out more liberally.”
Originally, this vibrant green powder was used to symbolise mindfulness and health, traditionally whisked and enjoyed during serene tea ceremonies. But thanks to the ever-shifting world of social media trends and a particular obsession with “fusion”, matcha has now invaded and, for many, ruined our Jalebi.
