The International Cricket Council (ICC) has sanctioned Pakistan batter Gull Feroza for showing dissent at the on-field umpire during the team’s Women’s Asia Cup group stage win against Hong Kong China in Dubai on Monday. Feroza has been fined 10% of her match fees and reprimanded with a demerit point.
The incident in question took place in the fifth over of Pakistan’s first innings in the match. Feroza was given out leg-before wicket after missing a full delivery from spinner Kary Chan. Before the umpire could raise her finger, Feroza gestured to her bat to indicate she had got an edge and seemed quite frustrated after realising her fate.
“Gull was found to have breached Article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel,
which relates to ‘showing dissent at an Umpire’s decision during an International Match’,” the ICC said in a release.
“Gull admitted to the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by Emirates ICC International Panel of Match Referees member Supriya Rani Das, meaning a formal hearing was not required. On-field umpires Rabab Ahsan and Rokeya Sultana, third umpire Shivani Mishra and fourth umpire Shathira Jakir levelled the charge,” the world body added.
This was Feroza’s second demerit point this year. In June, she was found guilty of breaching Article 2.2 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel for abusing cricket equipment during an international match. The cricketer was found to have aggressively thrown her bat and gloves near the team dugout.
Under the disciplinary code, four demerit points within 24 months are converted into suspension points, triggering a ban. Two suspension points equal a ban from one Test, two ODIs or two T20Is, whichever comes first. Demerit points are expunged after 24 months.
