New Delhi, Jun 10 (PTI) The Delhi Public Works Department has initiated the process to redevelop some road stretches as “model roads” in the city, officials said on Wednesday.
Under the pilot project, the PWD will redevelop 160 kilometres of road network this year to combat air pollution. It will undertake complete paving of road shoulders and central verges, along with landscaping and greenery work.
In the first leg, work will begin on the Shaheed Bhagat Singh Road.
“The Shaheed Bhagat Singh Road will be developed as a ‘model road’ at a cost of Rs 4.7 crore, for which a tender has been floated,” an official said.
The 3-kilometre road in West Delhi will be taken up for comprehensive work, including pothole repair, wall-to-wall paving and greenery.
“If the pilot project is successful, it will be expanded to other roads across the city. The process of identifying other roads is underway. These roads will be paved, and other dust reduction measures will be implemented,” the official added.
Earlier, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta had chaired a high-level review meeting to discuss measures to control air pollution and road dust.
According to the Delhi government, approximately 3,300 kilometres of road in the city require reconstruction or upgradation. This includes around 800 kilometres of road under the PWD; 1,200 kilometres under the Municipal Corporation of Delhi; and nearly 1,000 kilometres in unauthorised colonies.
Additionally, the government has identified 85.70 kilometres of road for extensive greenery work this year.
The total estimated cost for these works is expected to exceed Rs 400 crore, according to officials. PTI SSM SSM RUK RUK
