Moving abroad is often seen as a major step forward, especially when it comes with a better job or higher salary. But for one Bengaluru-based founder, leaving India did not automatically mean having a better life.
He said he once came close to moving to London after receiving a job offer from TikTok. However, instead of looking only at what he could gain, he started thinking about what he would have to leave behind.
He Started Thinking About What He Would Lose
Souveek Ray shared his experience while in London and said the city impressed him with its food, culture and historic places. Still, his visit made him think differently about the decision he had almost made.
“I know this might sound crazy, but I don’t think moving abroad is always the best
decision. And I say that as someone who almost moved to London a few years back,” Ray said.
“And a few years ago, I almost did. Had a great offer from TikTok, and I was so close to moving all over to London. But then I started actually thinking about what I’d be giving up, not what I’d be getting,” he said.
For Ray, one major factor was the support available to people who already have a good income in India. He said family and people nearby can make everyday life easier, especially when raising children.
“And that’s when it hit me: if you’re making decent money in India, life is honestly more comfortable than people abroad want to admit it. Uh, you’ve got family nearby, help raising your kids, people around you for all that everyday stuff. And here, you’re just doing it all alone,” he added.
He Says Moving Abroad Is Not Always An Upgrade
Ray made it clear that he does not think moving abroad is wrong. He said it can be the right choice for many people, but he does not believe it should automatically be seen as a better option.
“I’m not saying that trade is bad or it’s wrong. For a lot of people, that is the right choice. I just don’t think that’s the automatic upgrade people treat it to be,” he said.
He further added, “So yeah, London’s beautiful, but moving abroad isn’t automatically moving forward. Sometimes it’s just moving sideways and calling it as upwards. For me, the opportunity is in India, and I’m not ready to trade it for a cleaner photo.”
In his caption, Ray said India has its problems but also “an incredible opportunity ahead.” He added that he wants to “build in India, for India and for the world.”
