An albino buffalo in Bangladesh that went viral for resembling US President Donald Trump is set to be sacrificed during Eid al-Adha after becoming a major attraction on social media and drawing large crowds to a farm near Dhaka.
The nearly 700-kg buffalo, raised in Narayanganj, gained the nickname “Donald Trump” because of the blond tuft of hair on its forehead, which many people compared to the US President’s hairstyle.
Farm owner Ziauddin Mridha said the animal had already been sold for sacrifice during Eid al-Adha, one of Islam’s most important festivals marked by the ritual sacrifice of livestock.
“I am going to miss Donald Trump, but that is the core spirit of Eid al-Adha — making a sacrifice,” Mridha told AFP.
Over the past few weeks, the four-year-old
buffalo attracted visitors from across Bangladesh, with many arriving to click photographs and record videos with the unusually coloured animal. Children also gathered outside the farm hoping to catch a glimpse.
According to Mridha, the nickname was suggested by his younger brother after noticing the buffalo’s blond hair. He described the animal as calm and gentle, saying albino buffaloes generally do not behave aggressively unless provoked.
The owner said the buffalo required extensive care, including four baths daily and multiple meals to maintain its condition ahead of Eid. However, he added that the constant attention and crowds had stressed the animal, causing some weight loss and forcing restrictions on visitors.
Livestock officials said albino buffaloes are extremely uncommon in Bangladesh due to the absence of melanin, which gives them pale skin, a pinkish nose and light-coloured hair.
Bangladesh is preparing for Eid al-Adha later this month, a period during which millions of livestock are sacrificed nationwide. In recent years, unusually large or unique cattle have frequently gone viral during the festival season and often receive celebrity-inspired nicknames.
