Chandigarh, Jun 16 (PTI) Thirteen Bangladeshi nationals residing in Gurugram illegally have been detained and will be deported, police said on Tuesday.
Keeping national security and law and order considerations in view, the Gurugram Police is conducting a special verification drive to identify and verify Bangladeshi nationals residing illegally in Gurugram, the police said.
Appropriate legal action will be taken against individuals whose documents are found to be suspicious or who fail to produce valid proof of legal residence in India, they said.
As part of this drive conducted under Gurugram Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Hitesh Yadav, a team of Crime Branch Sector-39, Gurugram, conducted a special checking operation based on specific
intelligence inputs to verify Bangladeshi-origin persons allegedly residing illegally at construction sites and slum settlements in Gurugram.
During the operation, various construction sites and slum clusters were checked, and the identities and citizenship status of suspected individuals were verified. During this verification process, 13 Bangladeshi nationals residing illegally were identified, and documents relating to their Bangladeshi citizenship were also recovered, the Gurugram Police said.
During police interrogation, it was revealed that the identified Bangladeshi nationals had allegedly entered India illegally through the Kaliaganj border in West Bengal with the assistance of Bangladeshi agents and were residing here while posing as labourers.
These Bangladeshi nationals will be deported through the due legal process, the police said.
“Thirteen Bangladeshis who were living illegally have been detained,” Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Naveen Sharma said.
“They possess Bangladeshi identity cards and they also used to call back home on Bangladeshi phone numbers,” he said.
The legal process to deport them will be followed. They will be kept in a deportation centre in Manesar till the time formalities to deport them are completed, he said.
The Gurugram Police is carrying out verification of documents and identities of persons residing at various locations, including slum settlements, colonies, rented accommodations, industrial areas and hotels.
Intensive verification and checking operations are being conducted across multiple locations.
The Gurugram Police has appealed to all citizens that if they receive information about any suspicious person or any foreign national residing illegally, they should immediately inform the police.
Citizens have also been requested to ensure police verification of their tenants, domestic helpers, employees and persons working in hotels and commercial establishments.
“If any suspicious individual is residing in your vicinity, please immediately inform the Police Control Room by dialling 112 or contact the nearest police station,” the Gurugram Police has urged citizens.
It has also appealed to the citizens and resident welfare associations (RWAs) to extend full cooperation in this campaign. Every effort will be made to ensure public convenience while continuing the drive with national security and public interest as the highest priorities, the police said.
The Gurugram Police said that Indian citizens and foreign nationals residing legally in India need not be concerned about this campaign. No innocent person will be unnecessarily harassed. Strict legal action will be taken against anyone found spreading misleading, false or fabricated rumours regarding the campaign, it said. PTI SUN KSS KSS
