In view of the deteriorating air quality across the national capital, the government has barred entry to vehicles registered outside Delhi that do not meet BS-VI emission standards, with the decision likely to affect ten lakh vehicles in Gurugram, Faridabad and Noida.
The restriction is set to take effect on November 1 and will remain in force until January 31.
As per the Delhi Government’s notification “All motor vehicles registered outside the National Capital Territory of Delhi and below BSVI emission standards shall not be permitted to ply in Delhi from Nov 1st to Jan 31, 2027”.
The move is part of the Delhi Government’s pollution control plan as the capital experiences declining air quality, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) reaching 348 on Wednesday.
An AQI above 300 is classified as ‘hazardous’ and poses a serious risk to public health.
Are There Any Exemptions?
While the new rule could affect lakhs of commuters who cross into Delhi for work, exemptions have been made for CNG, electric vehicles, ambulances, fire tenders and specified essential-service vehicles.
BS-VI-compliant vehicles registered outside Delhi are allowed to enter the city.
The restriction also does not affect Delhi-registered vehicles under this particular provision. However, other pollution and vehicle-age rules continue to operate.
It is pertinent to note that no exemption has been made for two-wheelers.
How Many Vehicles Will Be Affected?
Around ten lakh vehicles across Gurugram, Faridabad, and Noida will be affected due to the fresh provision.
In Gurugram and Faridabad, nearly two lakh vehicles do not meet BS-VI standards and will be barred from entering the city.
The two Haryana districts also have around 50,000 commercial vehicles below the standard, according to the transport department data.
The numbers are even higher in bordering Uttar Pradesh.
