Bhubaneswar, Apr 27 (PTI) Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Monday praised Ono Keiichi, Japan’s Ambassador to India, for highlighting Odisha’s staple food ‘Dalma’ on his social media platform.
The Japanese Ambassador to India had earlier, in a post on X, stated, “Enjoyed #Dalma in #Odisha. Delicious, and a wonderful reflection of Odisha’s rich culinary culture!. He also attached three pictures while eating ‘Dalma’.” During his visit on April 24 to Odisha’s Sambalpur, where JSW Group and Japan’s JFE Steel Corporation formalised a joint venture to invest over Rs 32,000 crore for the expansion of a steel project in Sambalpur, Ono Keiichi was offered ‘Dalma’ in the meal.
He expressed appreciation for Odia cuisine and highlighted the state’s vibrant
food culture after relishing a traditional meal featuring rice and Dalma — a wholesome signature dish prepared with lentils, vegetables, and subtle spices that embodies the region’s culinary traditions.
The diplomat’s social media post drew attention and reflected the envoy’s genuine fondness for local flavours. His earlier posts have also shown appreciation for other Odia delicacies, like ‘chhena poda’ (baked cheese), reflecting a personal interest in Indian regional cuisines.
While appreciating the guest’s gesture, Majhi in reply said, “Delighted to see you enjoying the flavours of Odisha, Ambassador Ono San! Dalma is the heart of our kitchen, and we are honoured by your kind words. May our bond continue to grow over many more such meals. Ono San, Arigatou Gozaimasu! ” The CMO in a release said that traditional Odia food was served to the Japanese Ambassador at the event in Sambalpur.
“The Ambassador was very happy with the taste of traditional Odia food. He especially liked the taste of Dalma,” it said. PTI AAM AAM RG
