After winning the New York Mayor elections, Zohran Mamdani on Wednesday he has won the elections but the “beautiful prose of governing has only just begun” as “New Yorkers deserve a government they can trust”.
Speaking for the first time publicly as the New York mayor-elect, Mamdani said: “Last night we made history. I am so proud to be standing here today as the mayor elect of the greatest city in the world. Over two million New Yorkers cast their ballots… I will work everyday to honour the trust that I now hold.”
“The poetry of campaigning may have come to a close last night. But the beautiful prose of governing has only just begun,” he said.
Speaking on his future plans, Mamdani vowed to “build a city hall capable of delivering” his campaign’s
promises of integrity and compassionate government.
He also announced some of the members of his transitional team. He said that the leaders overseeing his agenda will be announced “in the coming days”. These people will be united by a commitment to “solving old problems with new solutions,” he said.
BBC quoted Mamdani as saying that he will be looking to the all-women transition team he has named today to help deliver results. They have “a track record of being able to handle multiple crises at the same time,” he said.
Democrats registered major wins in the November 2025 polls, led by Zohran Mamdani’s historic New York City mayoral victory and key gubernatorial triumphs in New Jersey and Virginia. He will take office on January 1, 2026. He will be New York City’s first Muslim mayor, the youngest since 1892, and the first born in Africa.
While pointing out that “New Yorkers deserves a government they can trust,” the mayor-elect said after is inaugurated it will mark “a new era for our city – one that we all feel invested in”.
Speaking on his first reaction after hearing the results, Mamdani said: “It took a moment for it to settle in.”
BBC quoted him as saying that the first thing he did on finding out that he’d won the mayoral race was “drink some water”.
While the White House has not yet congratulated Mamdani on his win, he said he’s still interested in having a conversation with Donald Trump – whether that’s about “delivering on his [Trump’s] campaign promises around cost of living”, or the issues New Yorkers have been sharing with him about the impacts of Trump’s policies, BBC reported.
“So I look forward to having those conversations, and to making clear that if there is ever anything to be spoken about that could benefit the people of this city, I am ready and willing to speak to anyone about it,” he said.

Mamdani further said that he won’t “mince my words” when it comes to Donald Trump. While emphasising that he will continue to describe the President’s actions as they are but will always do so “while leaving a door open to have that conversation”, because “it cannot be understood as if it is an argument between two individuals”.
He said that New York is facing “twin crises this moment – an authoritarian administration and an affordability crisis”.
“And it will be my job to deliver on both. It will be my job to stand up for the city and also to ensure that we do not look at Washington DC as if it is the reason for all of the problems right here in New York City,” he said.
Replying to a question on the safety of Jewish New Yorkers, the mayor-elect said his City Hall “will stand steadfast with Jewish New Yorkers in fighting the scourge of antisemitism”.
He vowed to continue to “deliver on the promise of not just protecting Jewish New Yorkers but celebrating and cherishing them”.
