Star Cameroon right-winger Bryan Mbeumo on Sunday, October 19, created history to score the fastest goal in the history of all Manchester United vs Liverpool clashes in the Premier League at Anfield, Liverpool’s
home, when he scored in the second minute of the game.
This marks just the second time a goal has been scored within the first two minutes in a Premier League clash between Liverpool and Manchester United.
The other early scorer is former midfielder Nicky Butt, who found the net for Manchester United at Old Trafford in October 1995.
Mbeumo’s goal was not without controversy. Argentina midfielder Alexis Mac Allister went down with a head injury after a collision with Virgil van Dijk inside Liverpool’s half.
Manchester United played on and Amad Diallo’s pass found Mbeumo, who slotted the ball past goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili.
Liverpool footballers and manager Arne Slot were frustrated with referee Michael Oliver for not stopping play when Mac Allister went down after a head collision. As the latter remained on the ground, Manchester United continued and scored.
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher later echoed the criticism during Sky Sports commentary.
“Play is stopped if, in their opinion, a player is seriously injured or receives a head injury,” the FA rulebook says.
Mbeumo’s goal was his second Premier League strike for Manchester United, after his effort against Burnley in August. He looked threatening in the first 30 minutes at Anfield, alongside Diallo, Bruno Fernandes and Matheus Cunha, who all troubled Liverpool early on.
Fernandes had an opportunity to double Manchester United’s lead midway through the first half. Diallo played the ball back to the United captain inside the box, but Fernandes’ shot sailed just wide.
Just before that, Dutch left-winger Cody Gakpo had a golden opportunity to level for Liverpool. Mohamed Salah set him through on goal, but his shot struck the base of the post and was cleared.
