Two undertrial inmates made a daring escape from the district jail at Anaugi, approximately 25 km from Kannauj district headquarters, by scaling the prison wall on Sunday night, police reported. As per the officials, the escape was figured out at around 10 am on Monday during the routine headcount. Two prisoners were found missing.
As per a report by PTI, five officials, including the jailer and deputy jailer, have been suspended by the authorities over their alleged negligence.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Vinod Kumar explained that the inmates utilised blankets to create a makeshift rope and climbed over the jail wall to facilitate their escape.
The escapees have been identified as Dimpy alias Shiva, a resident of Malgawan village under Tathia
police station, who was an undertrial in a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, and Ankit, a resident of Hazarapur in the Talgram police station area, imprisoned for alleged Arms Act violations.

Upon being informed by jail staff, Jail Superintendent Bhimsen Mukund promptly alerted senior officers. Subsequently, SP Vinod Kumar and District Magistrate (DM) Ashutosh Mohan Agnihotri visited Anaugi jail, inspected the scene, and requested further details from the jail authorities.
The SP said police teams have been formed and raids are being conducted at possible hideouts to nab the fugitives. “Efforts are on to arrest both inmates at the earliest,” he said.
In a statement issued by the Kannauj district administration, the DM declared that preliminary evidence of negligence by jail officials and staff had prompted the suspension of Jailer Vinay Pratap Singh and Deputy Jailer Badri Prasad from the prison headquarters.
The DM has also initiated action to suspend jail warders Shivendra Singh Yadav, Atul Mishra, and Naveen Kumar through the senior jail superintendent.
The DM stressed in the statement that any negligence regarding prison security would not be tolerated.
