How India Beat Australia?
In one of the most memorable matches of her career, Rodrigues scored an unbeaten 127 off 134 balls (14×4) and formed a 167-run partnership with skipper Harmanpreet Kaur (89). India achieved 341/5 in 48.3 overs, surpassing Australia’s 338 all out in the second semifinal at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai.
Chasing a record target of 339, Rodrigues anchored the innings brilliantly with an unbeaten 127 off 134 balls, while skipper Harmanpreet Kaur contributed a crucial 89 off 88 deliveries.
Deepti Sharma (24) and Richa Ghosh (26) also made handy contributions as India overhauled the target with nine balls to spare.
Earlier, Phoebe Litchfield’s stellar century (119 in 93 balls, including 17 fours and three sixes) was the highlight of Australia’s innings, helping them post a formidable 338 runs.
After Australia chose to bat first at Navi Mumbai’s DY Patil Stadium, Litchfield and Ellyse Perry steadied the innings following captain Alyssa Healy’s early dismissal. Litchfield scored 119 in 93 balls at a strike rate of 127.95, forming a 155-run partnership with Perry (77 in 88 balls, with six fours and two sixes). This set a strong foundation for Australia at 180/2 before Amanjot Kaur (1/51) bowled Litchfield out. Shree Charani (2/49) and Radha Yadav (1/66) further dented Australia’s progress, reducing them to 265/6 in 41.4 overs. Nonetheless, a 66-run stand between Gardner (63 in 45 balls, with four boundaries and four sixes) and Kim Garth (17) propelled Australia past the 300-run mark. The Aussies ended their innings at 338 all out after a late surge.
Litchfield’s century made her the youngest to score a Women’s World Cup knockout century. She has consistently performed well against India, amassing 627 runs in nine innings at an average of 69.66, with two centuries and four fifties, and has never been dismissed for under 25 in women’s ODIs against them. She joins the ranks of Healy (170 against England in the 2022 WC final and 129 against WI in the 2022 semifinal) and Karen Rolton (107* against India in the 2005 final) as the third Australian to score a century in a 50-over World Cup knockout match.
