Berhampur (Odisha), Jun 25 (PTI) The government-run MKCG Medical College and Hospital here has conducted its first therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) therapy on a 40-year-old woman suffering from haematology and Atypical Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (AHUS).
The TPE therapy helps remove toxins responsible for certain serious syndromes of several ailments. The therapy cleans the antibodies which the body produces against itself in some diseases which affect the various parts of the body, brain, nerves and blood cells.
The patient was recently admitted to the medicine ward in critical condition. She has responded well to the treatment, said the doctors.
The doctors had first conducted this therapy on a 10-year-old boy some time back. However, the patient
did not respond significantly. In this case, the woman has responded well to the treatment, said Dr Barsha Baisakhi Panda, assistant professor of transfusion medicine.
The condition of the woman had severely impacted her renal function, resulting in complications, said the doctor, adding that at least four sessions of the TPE would be conducted on her.
The procedure was conducted by a dedicated multidisciplinary team under the guidance of Dr Sabita Palai, head of the department of transfusion medicine.

“This procedure has filtered the blood which can lower levels of antibodies so that the patient can cure” Palai added.
Harikrishna Dalai, dean-cum-principal of the college, said the TPE will come as a relief to the citizens of the southern Odisha district, who go for this therapy to other places by spending a lot of money. They can now avail this procedure here at no cost, he said.
Sudeepa Das, superintendent of the medical college and hospital, congratulated the team of the transfusion medicine for successfully conducting the TPE.
