The grandeur of the set, the reassuring presence of Amitabh Bachchan and the iconic hot seat, Kaun Banega Crorepati has, for years, fuelled the dream of lakhs of citizens who wish to test their knowledge on the country’s most celebrated quiz show. Beyond the prize money, the show offers something equally valuable, like recognition, respect and a chance to be known for one’s intellect. But how does one contestant finally emerge from among lakhs to sit across from Amitabh Bachchan on national television?
The answer, according to Kavita Parkhe, a contestant from KBC Season 17, lies in a rigorous, multi-stage selection process. Parkhe, who hails from the small town of Khandwa, won Rs 12.3 lakh on the show and said that the journey to the hot seat
is demanding but achievable for anyone committed to learning.
Speaking to Local18, Parkhe said that preparation begins much before the show airs. Since KBC is fundamentally a knowledge-based platform, she stressed that continuous study and a strong grasp of general awareness are essential. The formal process starts nearly two to two-and-a-half months before the season begins, when registration promos begin airing on Sony TV.
During this phase, Amitabh Bachchan poses 15-20 registration questions every night. Viewers can submit their answers through the Sony LIV app or via WhatsApp. Those who answer correctly are shortlisted and contacted by the KBC team through an IVR call.
Parkhe advises aspirants to remain alert once they register, as the call can come at any time. During the IVR interaction, candidates are asked for basic personal details and are required to answer two additional questions within a strict 10-second window. Clearing this round leads to the next stage, the ground audition, which may sometimes be conducted online.
At the audition, candidates take a general knowledge test. Those who qualify are interviewed the same day. However, the results are not announced immediately. Shortlisted participants are sent home and informed later through a phone call, which again requires them to stay attentive.
The final hurdle is the Fastest Finger First round, where speed and accuracy determine who reaches the hot seat. Only after clearing all four stages (registration, IVR screening, audition and Fastest Finger First) does a contestant earn the chance to play on the main stage.
Parkhe, who works as an Assistant Grade III at the District Court, successfully navigated each of these steps to realise her dream.
