A 26-year-old woman moved back to India for work and looking forward to doing it but she soon found herself struggling with toxic corporate culture and office politics. This made her question whether leaving
London or Singapore had been the right decision.
The woman shared her experience through a Reddit post with a title, “Moved back to India for work, now I’m seriously regretting it.”
In the post, she explained that she had spent most of her schooling in Singapore and always loved visiting India. “I did most of my schooling in Singapore, and India was always my favourite place to visit. I loved coming back so much that I even chose to do my undergrad here,” she wrote on Reddit.
Later, she moved to London for her master’s and started working there. “I loved my job, and for reasons completely unrelated to work (and honestly, pretty stupid in hindsight), I left,” she added. Leaving London, a city she had dreamed of since childhood, was her “first mistake,” she said.
From Singapore To India
After London, she returned to Singapore and joined an investment bank. But the team she was part of dissolved within six months. Since the company was outsourcing work to India and she had built connections with the people she was training, they encouraged her to move there.
“The pay was obviously lower, but the idea of being home felt comforting, so I said yes,” she wrote. At first, the idea of being home felt reassuring but the reality was different.
Facing Workplace Reality: ‘Boss Culture Is Toxic’
Three months into her new job, she realised the work environment was very different from what she expected. “The boss culture is toxic, the politics drain me, and the work environment feels worlds apart from what I was used to in UK. I miss the openness, the structure, and the respect for boundaries. Here, I’m literally having to justify taking a day off,” she wrote.
She also questioned her decision: “I don’t know if this is just an adjustment phase or if I made a huge mistake. Do you think I should apply back to UK & Europe?”

Reddit Users Share Their Take On Her Move Back
Her post sparked a discussion among Reddit users with many sharing advice and even humorous takes on her situation.
One user advised, “That’s why whenever there’s a thing between emotions vs brain you should always choose brain. If you don’t have any aged parents, better to leave.”
Another wrote, “Yes go back. Your idea of India was a fantasised version. What you are seeing now is reality. Go back to Singapore or London.”
“Go back if you can. For people like us, who’ve been fighting this culture since the first day of our work lives, it’s honestly exhausting,” someone else said.
“That’s Indian corporate for you…a truly heartbreaking experience. Don’t believe LinkedIn posts and social media platforms. It’s hell out there,” a person shared.
Some suggested exploring better options within India with one Redditor commenting, “Not denying your experience at all, but you may also want to take a look at changing your employer depending on possibilities in your field, if you see yourself staying back in India. Not all workplaces are healthy but if you do end up in a good atmosphere, nothing feels greater than being home. It’s a toss of luck at the end of the day.”
Meanwhile, a person pointed out, “It’s always funny when people despite everyone telling them not to come back, come back and then regret it,” while another joked, “Love it when people trying to be SRK from Swadesh gets their dose of reality check LOL.”
Despite her work frustrations, the woman also highlighted the “little joys” of being back home. She mentioned that the social life, festivals and even small conveniences like Blinkit make her daily life enjoyable.
