After securing their berth in Super 4, Team India are scheduled to face Oman in their final group-stage fixture in the Asia Cup on Friday in Dubai. India have been undefeated in the ongoing continental championship and Oman’s loss to UAE in their previous encounter finalized India’s qualification to the next round.
However, the men in blue will continue to maintain their winning streak and end the first round as the table toppers.
The Indian team management is unlikely to make changes to its playing XI for the inconsequential final group league Asia Cup match against Oman on Friday, except for resting pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah.
With the Super Four fixtures scheduled on September 21, 24, and 26, followed by the final on September 28, tournament
favourites India could potentially play four matches in seven days if they qualify for the title clash.
According to PTI, the team management understands the importance of keeping their premier fast bowler fresh for the demanding stretch ahead.
While it is unclear if Bumrah himself wants to skip the game, the decision is expected to be pragmatic. It is deemed wiser to have him fully charged for the critical stages of the tournament rather than risking him in a match of little consequence.
In this scenario, either Arshdeep Singh or Harshit Rana is likely to step in, with Arshdeep having the additional incentive of being close to reaching 100 T20I wickets.
On the batting front, the top and middle order would benefit from more time at the crease in match situations.
India’s first two outings, against the UAE and Pakistan, were too one-sided, and a proper contest against Oman could help them sharpen their game before facing tougher opponents like Afghanistan and Sri Lanka in the Super Fours.
