Arshad Warsi has weighed in on Bollywood’s long-running nepotism debate, saying the subject was hardly discussed when he entered the film industry. According to the actor, it was Kangana Ranaut who brought the term into mainstream conversation before it became one of the industry’s most fiercely debated subjects.
Arshad, however, said the existence of nepotism does not particularly bother him. While acknowledging that industry connections can help someone secure an opportunity sooner, he believes talent ultimately decides how long an actor survives.

Speaking to Filmygyan, Arshad was asked whether nepotism was something actors worried about when he began his career.
“Kangana (Ranaut)
came out with the idea of nepotism, and then it got big, and everyone started talking about it. Yes, it’s there, but it doesn’t bother me. My heart tells me at the end of the day it’s about how talented you are and that’s how far you will go,” he said.
Arshad’s own journey in Bollywood began without a film-family background. His argument is that access and longevity are two different things. While connections may make the first opportunity easier to obtain, he believes an actor’s ability eventually determines the course of their career.
Arshad Warsi Says Star Kids Face Their Own Pressure
The actor also spoke about the other side of the debate, particularly the expectations attached to children of established actors.
“I also know that it’s not easy for a star kid. The expectations are so high. It’s like today I see that happening with my child,” Arshad said.
He explained that audiences often expect star kids to automatically possess the same abilities as their parents simply because they come from acting families.
According to Arshad, that expectation can itself become an unfair burden. He said “too much is expected” of star kids, who are frequently under pressure to match the reputation or success of their parents.
For him, therefore, having an industry connection can make access easier, but it does not guarantee that an actor will succeed once the opportunity arrives.
Kangana Ranaut And Bollywood’s Nepotism Debate
Kangana has remained one of the Hindi film industry’s most outspoken voices on nepotism over the years.
One of the defining moments in the debate came during her appearance on Karan Johar’s chat show Koffee With Karan. Sitting across from the filmmaker, Kangana famously referred to him as the “flag bearer of nepotism.”
The remark became widely discussed and helped push conversations around insider privilege, opportunities for outsiders and film-family connections into the mainstream.
Since then, nepotism has repeatedly resurfaced whenever actors from prominent film families make their debuts or outsiders discuss their experiences trying to find work in Bollywood.
