Former India cricketer S Sreesanth has divulged more shocking details about his heated on-field altercation with the national men’s head coach Gautam Gambhir during a Legends League Cricket (LLC) match in December 2023. Sreesanth said in an interview revealed on Friday (June 19) that Gambhir told him, ‘I own you’ and even called him a Deshdrohi
(traitor), apart from ‘fixer’, which he had revealed earlier. The on-field spat unfolded after Gambhir missed a bouncer from Sreesanth in the post-retrieement friendly game. The pacer said he had decided to shelve the bouncers after retirement but brought it out because of how well Gambhir was playing him, adding that he was still shocked to see his former teammate and fellow Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)
politician react with such venom.
“Gauti stepped out on the first ball and flicked it because he knows my [game], he’s a very good cricketer,” Sreesanth said on Lallantop. “I don’t know about the coaching part, but he’s a very good cricketer. So, I bowled the bouncer and he did this [duck his body away] and you know what he said? ‘I own you’. I said, ‘Not you, your party, sorry our party’. It was clear, he abused me. What he shouldn’t have said he did, he called me a ‘fixer’. I leaned forward and asked him, ‘Gauti bhai, are you okay?’ Because I was huge, it looks like I would hit him. Then he was doing ‘F-F’ (using the F-word). Then he again said ‘fixer’, ‘Deshdrohi’.”
Gambhir has yet to speak publicly on the incident.
Sreesanth invites Gambhir to a ring-fight
Sreesanth had earlier in the interview invited another ex-teammate and politician, Harbhajan Singh, to a ring fight, and added Gambhir to his list after revealing this incident. He didn’t do it without extra spice, saying Gambhir won’t stand a chance against him.
“That’s why I said, ‘Bhajji dam hai toh aaja, Gauti dam hai toh aaja. Nahi ye toh tik nahi paayenge, udhar shots mein theek hai’ (Harbhajan Singh and Gauti, come into the ring if you dare. But Gauti won’t stand a chance, better he sticks in his shorts as a coach),” Sreesanth said.
