2025 US Open semifinalist Yuki Bhambri on Tuesday became only the second Indian tennis player after the legendary Rohan Bopanna to enter the top 20 in ATP doubles rankings, after his third-round appearance at the Australian Open alongside Andre Gorannson.
With this feat, Bhambri became the first Indian men’s doubles player to break into the Top 20 since Bopanna, climbing from No. 22 after a run of strong performances on the tour.
Bhambri has been in excellent form, reaching finals and making deep runs in major tournaments, including Grand Slams. At the Australian Open, he partnered with Goransson and put in strong performances.
The Indo-Swedish duo beat local wildcards James Duckworth and Cruz Hewitt in the opening round, then pulled off a brilliant
comeback in the second round against Mexico’s Santiago Gonzalez and the Netherlands’ David Pel.
Bhambri and Goransson exited in the third round, but their run earned the former vital ranking points, propelling him into the elite Top 20. His rise has been steady throughout the past year.
In 2025, Bhambri, partnering New Zealand’s Michael Venus as the 14th seeds, reached the US Open semifinals but fell just short of the final, losing a tight match to England’s Neal Skupski and Joe Salisbury.
Earlier that season, Bhambri claimed his first ATP 500 title at the Dubai Tennis Championships alongside Alexei Popyrin, saving several match points in a thrilling final against England’s Henry Patten and Finland’s Harri Heliovaara.
Bhambri rose to become India’s No. 1 doubles player last year as well, ending Bopanna’s long-standing reign. Hailing from the Roundglass Tennis Academy, he is now all set to compete in ATP 500 events in the Middle East, aiming to climb further in the rankings before joining India for the upcoming Davis Cup tie against the Netherlands.
Ahead of the Australian Open, Bhambri and Gorannson also finished as semifinalists at the ASB Classic.
