Chennai, Jun 16 (PTI) In a major move to upgrade Tamil Nadu’s power infrastructure and ensure uninterrupted electricity supply across the state, Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay on Tuesday ordered the construction of 231 new substations at an estimated cost of Rs 15,032 crore.
Presiding over a high-level energy department review meeting at the Secretariat, the chief minister also directed the immediate recruitment of 15,058 power workers to rectify electricity glitches and mandated intensified patrolling by technical staff to prevent power outages.
According to an official release, the comprehensive review, which evaluated power generation, demand, distribution, and grid strengthening efforts with Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Limited
(TNPDCL) and its subsidiary companies, revealed that Tamil Nadu has sufficient power generation and procurement, leaving the state with zero electricity shortage.
However, temporary distribution-level outages in certain urban areas, including Chennai, were attributed to aging equipment, underground cable faults, surging power consumption, maintenance works, and accidental cable damages caused during road cuts by various civic agencies, the release added.
With regard to the development works and to expedite public grievance redressal, the government has deployed 77 new Fuse-Off Call (FOC) centers, seven additional breakdown repair teams, 125 repair vehicles, 10 high-level monitoring committees, and 2 underground cable fault detection teams.
