'Global Political, Economic Order Under Churn': Jaishankar Ahead Of BRICS Summit

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said Friday that the 18th BRICS Summit takes place at a time “when global political and economic order is under churn”, noting that resilience and cooperation are key to navigating challenges related to the present-day circumstances.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of BRICS Business Forum 2026, Jaishankar said: “Volatility, uncertainty, and complexity have become defining features of the world around us. We are witnessing the economic consequences of geopolitical conflicts, of pandemics, and of climate-related disruptions”.

However, he acknowledged that rapid digitalisation and technical advances are opening the door to new possibilities for growth.

“At the same time, rapid digitalization and technological advances are opening new possibilities for growth, productivity and development. The result is an economic landscape where both risks and opportunities are becoming more widely distributed and where the ability to anticipate, adapt and respond is acquiring greater importance”.

Underlining the significance of resilience in the face of rapidly changing geopolitical scenario, Jaishankar said: “Resilience therefore has become central to any nation’s economic strategy while fostering and promoting sustainability. All through deeper cooperation and stronger partnerships. It is here that BRICS brings particular relevance.”

Reflecting on the theme of the 18th BRICS Summit, the minister noted that “resilience, innovation, cooperation and sustainability” are vital to combating present-day challenges.

“India’s chair ship has sought to carry this evolution forward through the theme of building for resilience, innovation, cooperation and sustainability. That is BRICS. These priorities are especially relevant to the circumstances in which our countries find themselves today.”

India To Host 18th BRICS Summit

India is hosting the 18th BRICS Summit under its 2026 BRICS chairmanship, seeking to use the grouping as a platform for the Global South amid rising trade tensions and geopolitical uncertainty.

Various world leaders, including Chinese President Xi Jinping, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Russian President Vladimir Putin, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, UAE Crown Prince Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Vietnamese Prime Minister Le Minh Hung, will participate in the two-day event.
