Punjab gangster Amritpal Singh Bath, who is wanted in nearly 20 criminal cases in the state, has been detained by Canadian police, with Punjab Police beginning the documentation process to bring him back to India.
Surendra Lamba, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Tarn Taran, confirmed Bath’s detention and said the process to facilitate his return had begun. Once he is brought to India, the relevant security and investigating agencies are expected to initiate further legal proceedings and question him.
Bath, also known as Harpreet Singh, is categorised as an A-category gangster by Punjab Police.
According to a report in The Tribune, Bath is allegedly the mastermind behind the January 2024 murder of Avan Kumar, alias Sonu Cheema, a village sarpanch.
He was subsequently declared a proclaimed offender and is suspected to have fled abroad illegally.
He is also suspected of having links with the Khalistan Zindabad Force (KZF), with his associates allegedly providing logistical support.
Bath’s detention and the move to bring him back to India have drawn attention amid concerns over law and order in Punjab. The matter was also raised during a session of the Punjab Assembly, where Tarn Taran MLA Harmeet Singh Sandhu provided details about the case.
